Osteoporosis risk factors in postmenopauzal women, urban versus rural Print E-mail

The evaluation of an osteoporotic patient needs complete risk factors investigations, specifical to each individual. The genetical and endocrin factors, as well as the diet and the lifestyle carry the biggest influence in developing the disease. The study was made on 1600 women (866 from the urban area and 744 from the rural area). The results showed big differences between the two groups, that is that the number of risk factors in women from the urban area outnumbered the risk factors in women from the rural area, such as: early menopauze (45 years old vs 50 years old), sedentarism (55 % vs 83%), smoking (25% vs 0.5%), more than two coffees per day ( 28% vs 14%), dairy poor diet (38% vs 65%), more frequent fractures after the age of 45 (17% vs 10%), and, obviously, lower bone mineral density results in urban women (T score -2.2 vs -1.6, Z score -1.9 vs 0.06).
